It was a fun filled afternoon that unfortunately ended early because of a fight that broke out up on stage. Even the security personnel had a hard time breaking up the fights.

This talented 23 year-old bay area rapper from Richmond, CA spits bars like no other. He has collaborated with Messy Marv, Matt Blaque, Jamillions and plans on working with many more bay area rap artists. Slapside Ent. spends a beautiful afternoon at the iGrow hydroponics super store in Oakland, CA. This is the largest full service hydroponic superstore in the bay area! They have a doctor on-site to perform medical cannabis evaluations for qualified patients. The founder, Dhar Mann, is thrilled by the strong support the the City of Oakland and the community has shown for the grand opening of their new business.

At the iGrow 420 eve party celebration, Merge20, ran into the bay area rapper The Jacka and took a snapshot. The Jacka is making his way to the top where seasoned veterans such as Too Short, E-40, Andre Nickatina, and many others have paved the road to success. He is a bay area rap artist from Pittsburg, CA and is originally from the rap group The Mob Figaz. His hit singles include: All Over Me (feat. Matt Blaque), and Glamorous Lifestyle (feat. Andre Nickatina) which are from his 2009 rap album Tear Gas.

The event was a good turnout. There were vendors of different medical marijuana growing products with booths explaining how their products can benefit the cannabis growers business. How to Get Pro Quality Results When Recording Hip Hop Vocals in a Home Studio

This is some great information on recording vocals.

The now very affordable home studio recording setups have made it
possible for anybody with a computer to record and post songs online
to display to the world. The problem that has came to pass because of
this is massive amounts of songs(mostly hip hop) with poor vocal
performances captured and/or bad mixes where often time the vocal is
way too high in the mix or way too low in the mix and many times the
entire mix is distorted.

The reason for this comes down to a few things that this writing is
proud to offer solutions to. The first issue is the aspiring rappers
are buying the beats then recording the songs without any input from a
producer, not to be confused with the beat maker which is many times
referred to as a producer. A producer does produce the music a lot of
times however the main job of the producer is to coach the rapper in
order to get the very best performance out of them & captured as a
recording. The Producer lends another set of unbiased ears and a total
vision for the finished song and is like a guide through the recording
process.

The second issue that the aspiring rapper & home recording artist
fall victim to comes From not knowing how to capture the best vocal
recordings on their mic. The rapper should try to keep the microphone
about 3 to 6 inches from their mouth during recording and always do a
mic level check & adjust the mic input gain (in pro tools the
mbox) so that the recording input never hit's the red on the meter and
averages about the middle of the meter. This will ensure that the
vocal recording is loud enough without any distortion.

The Home recording rapper should record their vocals in a room with
little or no hint of echo or zing... a garage is not a good place to
record vocals, you DO NOT want the room sound in your vocal recording.
Blankets can be placed on walls around where the mic is to kill any
echo zing from the room & will improve the vocal recording. The
artist should always memorize the song before recording so that they
can record the performance with confidence & swagger rather than
the "reading from paper" vocal performance.

When recording vocals, the rapper should capture at least 1 flawless
take of each verse that can stand on it's own with every word
pronounced and clear before adding any overdubbed adlibs which should
be used to accent key phrases not to fix badly pronounced words.

When putting together the vocal mix over the beat keep the main vocal
tracks panned in the center, then pan accent adlibs slightly off
center left & right, then any additional adlibs/reaction words
(whether done by the rapper or a girl or a different person) pan those
further left & right . On all vocals put a high pass eq filter on
the vocal channels set at 80db. This will keep out any of the rumble
from the mic stand & generally will clean it up a bit. Start using
these tips right away & you will notice an instant improvement in
your finished songs. You can start using these tips right
away in order to obtain recording results comparable with real
(commercial)studio recordings.

Mixology Productions: How to Equalize Vocals

When Eqing, there's two types of EQ. One is subtractive, where you're removing a frequency to help others stand out better, and then there's additive EQ, where you boost frequencies to help the overall mix. Personally, I prefer relying on subtractive EQ for the lower frequencies, since additive EQ on the lower end tends to color the other frequencies in a way that's not too pleasing to the ear.

Insert a simple EQ plug-in on the vocal channel. Let's remove that low-end noise by putting a gentle slope on the low end, around 40 hz. Then, let's add a little bit of air to the vocals by adding about .5db of 6 Khz to the mix.

Now it's time to fix the intelligiblity issue. Most human speech, including singing, is centered around the mid frequencies, and are between, say, 500 hz and 10 khz. Let's add a gentle, wide boost to 2 khz. Now listen -- sounds much better doesn't it?

Of course, you could add some reverb (try and short reverb at 90% dry, 10% wet signal).

Hip-Hip Mixing Vocals 101: Compression

Our first step in mixing vocals in Pro Tools is to compress the vocals. Let's take a listen to how the vocal files sound naturally, with no editing or processing whatsoever. The first thing you'll notice is the vocals are quite rough and rugged.

For the sake of editing, let's go ahead and move the fader down on the vocal track so it slightly sits behind the mix.

Play back the files again with the vocal track brought down. Compare the vocal sound to a commercial recording you like. Notice how the vocals sound very "raw" in comparison? That's because they're not compressed.

Compression does two things for vocals. One, it can help a vocal track stand out better in the mix by sitting better within the overall mix itself. By compressing, you're making sure that the loud and soft parts of the vocals are even. Without it, the soft parts will get buried in the mix, and the loud parts will overpower the mix. You want the vocals to have a nice, smooth sound in the mix. Second compressing brings out the tone of the overall vocal sound better, allowing it to make a punchier impact.

Let's click on the insert area above the track, and insert a basic compressor select the preset "vocal leveler". If your rapper is very dynamic, like the artists on my page Slapside Entertainment, you'll want to bring the "attack" -how fast the compressor kicks on peaks/valleys - a little lower.

Now, you need to compensate for the volume loss you incur when you compress. Anytime you bring a compressor into the mix, you're changing volume, and you need to compensate for it. Move the gain slider up until you're satisified with the added volume. Listen to the mix now. Notice that the vocals lay much better in the mix.

Mixology digirack compression settings:

Thresh: -6.0

Comp ratio: 2 to 4 range

Attack: 1.2

Release 150 to 300 range

Knee: slightly adjust in the 100 range
